Avery Dennison Foundation InvEnt "Spirit of Invention" Scholarship Program
2009 marked the first anniversary of the Avery Dennison Foundation’s (the Foundation) InvEnt "Spirit of Invention" Scholarship Program in China. Committed to nurturing local talent, creativity and entrepreneurship, the Foundation has awarded sponsorships worth US$32,800 since its start. Those benefiting from the Foundation’s support this year included 16 outstanding students from the Beijing Institute of Graphic Communications; East China University of Science and Technology (Shanghai); South China University of Technology (Guangzhou); and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. This year also saw the Foundation mount an on-campus "Discover Innovation" InvEnt series which fostered academic excellence and innovation through informative interactive lectures and experimental team projects at selected Mainland universities.

Avery Dennison Foundation supports industry talent growth in India
To foster innovation in business leadership and technology development, Avery Dennison Foundation (the Foundation) has endowed a faculty chair at the South Indian Education Society (SIES) School of Packaging in Mumbai. The Foundation will contribute approximately US$125,000 over the five years from August 2008 in order to support the endowed chair and help SIES develop a self-adhesive technology curriculum and integrate it into its core four-year bachelor of engineering and two-year post-graduate packaging and printing programs. The Foundation’s association with SIES, one of India’s leading educational institutions, is intended to create long-term strategic benefits for the label and packaging industry in India. Over 140 students benefited in the 2008-2009 academic year and more than 120 new packaging students joined the program in 2009.
Avery Dennison advances RFID technology in China
Designed to develop the next generation of managers for Avery Dennison in China, the Leadership Development Program (LDP) provides local talents with competitive compensation and managerial training to help them understand operations in manufacturing, logistics, marketing, finance, and other areas. Program graduates usually take leadership positions within the company but those who choose to work for other organizations also normally assume managerial roles. In this way, the program has an additional, though unintended, benefit of offering a steady pool of top talents to drive the industry ahead.
First Multinational Corporation to offer corporate provident fund in China
In support of Fudan University’s ongoing RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) research and its exploration of new RFID technologies and applications in China, Avery Dennison Foundation donated a US$10,000 computer server to the institution’s Auto-ID Lab in early 2008. Joint cooperation on a more extensive project to promote RFID technology in China is now being explored and tested with the Auto-ID Lab and the university.
NRC Technical Internship Program for graduate students
Aiming to instill a global vision in the next generation of scientists in China, the Philip M. Neal Research Center (NRC) in Kunshan, China, launched an Avery Dennison R&D Technical Internship Program in Asia Pacific in 2007. Working closely with East China University of Science and Technology, Nanjing University of Technology, and Soochow University, NRC has developed an internship program for graduate students at these prestigious institutions. Under the program, graduate student interns take on regional research projects under the guidance of professional scientists. This enriches the student’s academic learning through on-the-job experience at state-of-the-art facilities. The first batch of three interns entered the program in February 2008 following a three-month recruitment drive and rigorous on-site interviews.
Leadership Development Program (LDP) for employees
Designed to develop Avery Dennison China’s (ADC’s) next generation of managers, the Leadership Development Program (LDP) provides local talents with competitive compensation and managerial training. The ultimate aim is to ensure participants better understand key operations such as manufacturing, logistics, marketing and finance. While program graduates usually take leadership positions within ADC, they are also free to take management positions with competitors. As a result, the program has the additional - although unintended - benefit of adding to the steady talent pool which is moving China’s packaging industry forwards. In 2008 and 2009, the LDP produced 11 and 17 associates respectively.
First Multinational Corporation to offer corporate provident fund in China
Avery Dennison has pioneered the Corporate Provident Fund Program in China since 2006. A voluntary program to benefit all full-time employees participating in China’s national pension scheme, it matches individual contributions to help employees accumulate wealth. These funds are vested with years of service and are transferable even after the employee leaves the company.
Donated over RMB 2 million disaster relief to Sichuan earthquake victims
Shortly after the 8.0 earthquake in Sichuan in May 2008, Avery Dennison expanded China employees' donations by matching their contributions to raise over RMB2 million. This fund was donated to the Red Cross and directed to post-quake reconstruction.
Fudan University Coaching Program to develop future leaders
Working in conjunction with an executive coaching consulting firm, Avery Dennison selected 55 top students from Fudan University in 2008 and has since been working to develop the elite group in cooperation with other multi-national corporations in China. Senior executives of Avery Dennison China have assumed a mentoring role, sharing their personal experiences and offering advice on career planning and development through monthly coaching sessions and interactions.
Avery Dennison India received visiting MBA students from the US
The Avery Dennison India plant at Gurgaon hosted a group of MBA students in January 2009 from the Robert H Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, USA, as part of their study course "Competitive Advantage through an India Strategy". The group met with Raj Srinivasan, Managing Director of Materials India, who shared his views on the Indian economy, his personal experience of doing business successfully in India, and his thoughts on the most important factors in building a lasting business.
Avery Dennison and its employees give generously to help Australia bushfire victims
In 2009, Australia witnessed the worst bushfires in its history, culminating in a death toll of over 200 people and the destruction of over 2,000 homes. Although no Avery Dennison employee was directly harmed by the fires, The Australian & New Zealand (ANZ) Avery Dennison Foundation coordinated a number of different activities to benefit the bushfire victims, and encouraged employees across Australia to contribute to organizations helping those in need, such as the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul Society. Avery Dennison also matched every dollar contributed by staff to the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

Avery Dennison ranks 315 in Newsweek's 2009 Green Rankings
In 2009, Avery Dennison ranked 315 in Newsweek's 2009 Green Rankings of America's 500 largest corporations. The company also ranked 15th out of the 28 companies in the "Basic Materials" category. The Newsweek Green Rankings recognize companies who work hard to better understand and minimize climate-threatening carbon emissions by benchmarking the 500 largest U.S. companies in terms of their actual environmental performance, policies and reputation.

Avery Dennison pledges support to sustainability
In December 2008, Avery Dennison participated in a Sustainability Summit hosted in Beijing by Wal-Mart. Attended by more than 1,000 leading suppliers and Chinese officials and NGOs, this Summit outlined a series of aggressive goals and expectations to build a more environmentally and socially responsible global supply chain. Avery Dennison demonstrated some of our eco-friendly products, including paper made from readily renewable sources such as corn, bamboo, and sugar cane, as well as printed bamboo fabric labels, organic cotton woven labels, and water-dissolvable garment tags. All of these products generated favorable comments and enquiries from visitors.

Avery Dennison and customers mount joint "Saving the Planet" initiative
Avery Dennison Thailand has long been exploring ways of minimizing wastage within its premises and last year identified a company to collect and recycle its waste. In leveraging the success of its sustainability initiative, it has now successfully recruited and educated two key customers about how they too can be more eco-friendly in their business. As of October 2009, Avery Dennison Thailand and the customers had collected 5,500 kgs of waste monthly for recycling.

Avery Dennison honored for its contribution to China’s economic growth
Avery Dennison (Suzhou) was awarded a US$1,300 bonus by the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) for its role in the Park’s business growth and continued economic stability during Q1, 2009. Rewarding park-based manufacturers such as Avery Dennison (Suzhou) for every dollar increase in exports achieved during each quarter, the SIP introduced such bonuses to promote China’s central government’s overseas trade expansion. Established in 1994, the SIP now contributes about 15% of Suzhou's GDP and about 30% of its gross import and export volume.
Avery Dennison recognized for community contribution
Every year, the Kunshan Municipal Government bestows the "Honorable Citizen" title on individuals from overseas, and from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, who have made astounding contributions to the economic and social development of Kunshan. In 2008, Dagang Li, vice president and general manager of Avery Dennison Roll Materials China, received the title of "Honorable Citizen" in honor of his contribution. Additionally, Avery Dennison received the "Best Foreign Investment Company" acknowledging its outstanding contribution to the steady and progressive development of the Kunshan economy. The company has earned this prestigious recognition every year since 1994, when it was first established in Kunshan.

Avery Dennison demonstrates the Spirit of India
The American India Foundation (AIF), a non-profit organization dedicated to "building an India where all people can gain access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities", presented Avery Dennison President and Chief Executive Officer, Dean Scarborough, with its 2008 Spirit of India Award. This recognizes Avery Dennison’s commitment to India, including its sustained investment, strong positive impact on the country, and leadership role in accelerating social and economic change in India, as well the company’s foresight in establishing a footprint in India in the early stages of the country’s economic liberalization.
