Avery Dennison Introduces Advanced New Medical Dressing Technology at MEDTEC China 2009

Shanghai, 18 September 2009 - Avery Dennison Specialty Tape Division, an innovative leader in adhesive materials for the medical sector, introduced two new ultra-thin adhesives and a hydrocolloid and adhesive technology solution at MEDTEC China this week.

Designed for use across the entire spectrum of wound care and for the most demanding surgical applications, the Avery Dennison Specialty Tape Medical division products generated a great deal of interest among Chinese manufacturers of surgical tapes and dressings for acute and chronic wound care and consumer applications.

“The medical technology sector is booming in China, fueled by massive domestic demand and the promise of huge international markets for high-quality, cost-effective medical devices. To help manufacturers in China grasp these huge opportunities, Avery Dennison is now introducing the very latest pressure-sensitive medical tape and adhesive products here,” said John Boogaard, Commercial Director of Avery Dennison’s Specialty Tape Division, Asia Pacific.

Celebrating its 30th year, and its second at MEDTEC China, Avery Dennison Specialty Tape Division is internationally recognized as a leader in adhesive materials for medical. The new products it launched at MEDTEC China 2009 included:

Ultra-thin Adhesive Solutions, which provide excellent fluid handling capacity at a 100 micron thickness to facilitate flexibility in design for consumer dressings and skin patches.

  • MED 5568H is optimized for foot care applications that require extra adhesion under tough conditions. Applications include dressings for blisters, corns and calluses.
  • MED 5573H is specially designed for optimal skin adhesion on hands and other more delicate parts of the body. Applications include island-less finger plasters and patches.

These ultra-thin adhesives can be combined with Avery Dennison’s industry-leading hydrocolloid technology to equal or surpass the fluid-handling capacity of most traditional, much thicker formulations.

Hydrocolloid Technology is an advanced antimicrobial technology designed for acute and chronic wound care, and for ostomy applications. Offering both adhesive and adsorptive performance, its benefits include full integration to eliminate leaching into a wound and greater fluid handling for higher absorption. In addition, the technology features:

  • No resins or tackifiers, which reduces irritation of fragile skin on wound edges.
  • Highly breathable film, allowing vapor transmission for longer wear time.
  • Very light color; translucent.
  • Gentle removal from damaged skin.
  • Long-term application.

Medical device manufacturers at MEDTEC China 2009 proved keen to discuss these advanced solutions with Avery Dennison and learn more about its applications in specialty dressings, thin films, and composites.

“MEDTEC China was a great success for Avery Dennison Specialty Tape Division this year,” said John Boogaard. “We predict that China’s medical device companies are poised for phenomenal growth as they harness the best international technologies to develop innovative home-grown products.”
